I believe it is most damaging when your perception of a person you thought you once knew so well is forced to adapt to a drastic change. Whether it may be a shift in behavior, a tweak in mannerisms, or the sudden realization that they were never what you once thought they were, there is no doubt that we feel what can be described as a sort of betrayal. We are now forced to face this new epiphany and are left to question whether the past was either deception or fantasy. While it yields no practical progress to wallow in what was past, we find it difficult to face the present, or let alone look to a future with this—for lack of better words—stranger. Therefore we tend to hold on to the belief that our previous perceptions were, in fact, flawed. We often deny the possiblity that we may have rendered the same deception to others and that we have also played a crucial part in this business of distorting perceptions. It is precisely this vanity that keeps us deeply rooted in our misery. It is not until we change the way in which we perceive ourselves that we are able to accept others—changes and all.
